Learn About the 3 Different Types of Pool Cleaners

  • Suction Side Pool Cleaners: The least expensive pool cleaner that uses the suction of your pump filter.
  • Pressure Side Pool Cleaners: Attaches to a return jet in your pool and uses water pressure to pump and filter debris into a filter.
  • Robotic Pool Cleaners: Automatic electronic pool cleaners that pump and filter debris into a self-contained net or cartridge that is easy to clean.
  • An automated pool cleaner is one of the most important functions of your pool. A pool cleaner is a powerful suction machine, or vacuum, that collects dirt and sediment from the walls, lining steps, and other areas of your swimming pool. The great thing about a pool cleaner is that it is automatic. That means little manual labor is needed for it to do its job.

There are 3 different pool cleaners or pool vacuums.

1 – Suction Side Pool Cleaners
2 – Pressure Side Pool Cleaners
    3 – Robotic Pool Cleaners

    Suction Side Pool Cleaner

    Suction Side Pool Cleaner

The first “automatic” pool cleaner to come on to the market. This is one of the most affordable pool vacuums out there and is easy to handle. The suction side cleaner is powered by your main pool pump. You can connect a suction side cleaner to a skimmer. The pool cleaner sucks the debris in the water and then returns it to the pump basket like a typical vacuum in your home.

However, a suction side pool cleaner does not clean as efficiently or effectively as a pressure side pool cleaner or robotic cleaner. If you are using a suction side cleaner you will need a powerful filter for an efficient cleaning. A suction side cleaner is mainly used to clean the bottom of a swimming pool.

    Pressure Side Pool Cleaner

    Pressure Side Pool Cleaner

Pressure side pool cleaners are much more effective than the suction side pool cleaner. The pressure side pool cleaner pushes and forcefully propels water into the cleaner. This will pick up algae, dirt, leaves and debris into a net bag or screen. What helps scrape up the debris from the sides and bottom of the pool is a “scrubber” which is attached at the bottom of the pressure side pool cleaner. This “scrubber” moves back and forth scrubbing dirt from the floor toward the pump.

    Robotic Pool Cleaner

    Robotic Pool Cleaner

The best pool cleaner you can get. A robot pool cleaner is convenient that does run on your filter system. There are inexpensive robot pool cleaners that will clean your pool and then more expensive models that have features like scrubbing, easy removal water release, remote controls and programmable cleaning cycles.

Robotic pool cleaners run on electricity. Don’t worry, it is very low voltage. Meaning, the robotic pool cleaner can submerge under water and you will save money on your electric bill. All you need is a long power cord you can get at your local Lowes, Home Depot, Harbor Freight Tools or Walmart. Plug your robotic pool cleaner in to a GFCI outlet and put your cleaner in the water.

The robotic pool cleaner automatically scrubs the walls and floors of your pool and vacuums up everything the size of 2-microns and above. How small is 2-microns? A human hair is the size of 1-micron. 2-Microns is incredibly small – the robotic cleaner will pick up every piece of debris in your pool you can think of.

The dirt and debris will be collected into a filter bag or built-in cartridge that is easy to clean. If your robotic pool cleaner breaks down and needs maintenance call us at: 480-824-8219 or request an appointment online.
